Many technologies are applicable to growing and using algae. Production is a broad term in this context, and this article provides an overview of the processes involved in producing fuel from algae.

There are numerous algal species, photobioreactor and pond designs, and nutrient media; as well as gas distribution, lighting, and temperature management strategies, that must be considered when designing a system.

[edit] Photobioreactors

The photobioreactor provides a suitable environment for algae growth. It provides a constant supply of nutrients, light, heat, and air.

[edit] Extraction

Further information: Extraction

A system is needed to extract useful chemicals from the algae, as well as process the chemicals into ones that are suitable for use as fuels.
