[edit] Registration

It is not required to become a member of this wiki to edit any of the articles. However, it is recommended that you do so, since you can track your efforts.

[edit] Content

Although you can simply use the wiki for its information, it does not grow unless information is added. Everyone has information they can add to Phyco.org, whether they know it or not. In Phyco.org, the primary subjects are alternative fuels and their production, as well as algae and its cultivation. However, it is not discouraged for users of the wiki (and thus, members of the Phyco.org community) to create alternative fuels-related articles on any such subjects as their local community, recent politics, even reviews on articles they have read. As long as proper wiki formatting is followed, and it has something to do with alternative fuels and/or algae, anything goes.

[edit] Articles

Content in a wiki is organized as articles. These are webpages created within the Phyco.org database. You don't need to know HTML to create these pages, though the style of formatting is similar. All the header, meta, and body information is taken care of. All you need to worry about is the content.

[edit] Links

Navigation within the wiki is accomplished by internal links. There are different kinds of links, which are identified by color or symbol.

  • Internal Links: An article that needs to be edited appears as a red link. A blue link is an article that is present, but may still be edited. If the link is purple, you have already visited that article.
  • External Links: A link with an arrow to the right of it is an external link. This means that clicking this link will take your web browser outside of Phyco.org. All the links that lack this symbol are articles within Phyco.org.

[edit] Tabs

There are also tabs on the top of the article.

  • discussion: This is an area where anybody may post comments on this article. If you're unsure of making a change, post your ideas there.
  • edit this page: If you wish to edit a current article, this tab will take you to the source of the page, which is full of formatting syntax. It may look confusing at first, but you will quickly learn to look through this and see the content.
  • history: Any changes you make to an article will be tracked. Thus, you should always preview your changes before saving! Here you will see the summaries of the work done before on this page, and by clicking on the link to that revision, you can see what the article looked like before. This is very useful in many ways!
  • move: It is recommended that this feature be used very sparingly. This moves a page from one name to another. It can be useful, however, it is recommended to create a disambiguation page, or at least a redirect page.
  • watch: If you are logged in, this adds the article to a list that you can access by clicking "my watchlist" at the very top of the page.

[edit] Formatting

[edit] Examples & Reference

Phyco.org models much of its formatting after the [www.wikipedia.org| Wikipedia project], which is perhaps the most popular wiki. Thus, if you wish to make your article look professional, look up a similar topic in Wikipedia and examine the source formatting. You may also refer to meta.wikimedia.org for exacting detail on formatting elements.

[edit] Editing

If you wish to create a new article, it's best to edit a current article or category, then click the red link. A red link takes you to a page that allows you to easily create an article's contents. You may also wish to edit an article. This can be accomplished by clicking on the "edit this page" tab on the top of the page.

[edit] Tools

You will see a toolbar with eleven icons above the text output field and the wiki content input box. This contains just a few of the many formatting tags used in the Phyco.org knowledge databse.
